Is Yono Games Legal in India? (2026 Law Explained)

By YonoGames.live Team · Updated · 3 min read

Short answer: no. Real-money Yono games are not legal in India. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 has been in force since 1 May 2026. It bans offering online money games, advertising them, and processing payments for them, whether the game is based on skill or chance. Yono games apps (rummy, slots, Teen Patti, spin and colour prediction apps played for money) fall inside that ban.

This page explains what the law says, what it means if you have already played, and where to read the official text. It is general information, not legal advice.

What the Online Gaming Act 2025 bans

The Act divides online games into three groups:

Type Example Status
E-sports Competitive video games in recognised tournaments Allowed and promoted
Online social games Casual and educational games with no money staked Allowed
Online money games Any game where you deposit money expecting to win money or other stakes Banned

For online money games the Act prohibits three things:

  1. Offering them: running or providing the platform.
  2. Advertising them: promotion that directly or indirectly induces people to play.
  3. Financial transactions for them: banks, payment apps and other financial institutions may not process payments.

The ban applies regardless of whether the game is skill-based or chance-based. That is the big change: before the Act, many rummy apps relied on court rulings that rummy is a game of skill.

Is Yono games banned in India?

In practice, yes. Every Yono games app built around deposits and withdrawals is an online money game under the Act. Since the Act came into force, authorities have been blocking money-game sites and asking app stores, banks, payment companies and internet providers to cut such services off. That is why:

  • Yono games apps are not on the Google Play Store.
  • Domains change often and old links stop working.
  • UPI deposits fail or bounce, and withdrawals get stuck.

What it means for players

The Act's penalties are directed at operators, advertisers and those who facilitate payments. The government described players as people the law is meant to protect, and the Act does not create a separate offence for simply playing. But that does not make playing safe:

  • Your money has no protection. Unlicensed apps have no regulator, so a refused withdrawal has no complaint route except police and cybercrime channels.
  • Payments can be frozen. Banks are barred from processing these transactions.
  • Access can vanish overnight when a domain or app is blocked.

What about states?

Before the central Act, gambling was mainly a state subject and states had their own rules (for example, Tamil Nadu regulated online real-money games through its own authority). The central Act now sets a nationwide ban on online money games. Several gaming companies challenged it, and the cases were moved to the Supreme Court. Until a court rules otherwise, the ban applies.

That depends on your country. Many countries license online casinos and card games; many others prohibit them. Yono games apps are designed for India and usually don't hold licences anywhere, so check your local law before playing anywhere.

Bottom line

Real-money Yono games are illegal to offer, advertise or process payments for in India, and that makes them risky to use. If you are already playing, set a hard limit, withdraw what you can, and read our responsible gaming page for support options.
